The operation of the fire engine water pump is solely dependent upon the knowledge and skill of the Engineer. Connecting a fire hydrant to the engine water pump to boost the pressure ensures the firefighters can complete the task assigned. The apparatus water tank holds approximately 500 to 1500 gallons and is controlled at the pump panel. The pump panel is comprised of several switches and levers that control precisely how much water is flowing through the system and which hose lines are being discharged. This position is required to ensure the firefighters safety by making sure there is sufficient water flow to control or extinguish a fire. Promoting to this position generally requires experience as a working firefighter and is one of the most rewarding positions in the fire service.
